ronfongCalifornia Grocers Association President and Chief Executive Officer Ronald Fong was recently elected to The California State University Foundation Board of Governors.

“We are honored to welcome Ronald Fong to our foundation team,” said CSU Board of Governors Chair Ronald Barhorst. “He has an exceptional history of leadership and will bring a valuable business perspective to the board. We look forward to his insight as we continue to grow our endowment to serve the CSU and the state of California.”

The CSU Board of Governors oversees the CSU Foundation: the university’s central foundation that aims to strengthen the financial capacity of the CSU and broaden access to a high quality education. The Board represents a cross-section of business, community, cultural and educational leaders with a shared commitment to uphold and advance the mission and goals of the university.

“This is a tremendous honor,” said Fong of his election. “I am a proud alumni of the CSU system and hold a unique perspective on understanding both the food business and the university’s mission. I look forward to contributing to the Board and helping to guide the Foundation. Because of the success of our own very successful Foundation, I can forsee symmetries and partnerships between the two organizations”.

In 2008, Fong was named President and CEO of the California Grocers Association and the CGA Educational Foundation. During his tenure, he has guided the successful merger of the California Independent Grocers Association into CGA; strengthened the Association’s government relations program; directed the purchase of a new office building in downtown Sacramento; and oversaw the development and completion of an Association reserve fund. In 2015, Fong received the Donald H. McManus Award from the Food Marketing Institute, the highest recognition for a state grocery association executive.

CGA Educational Foundation marks 25-year legacy of awarding California’s serving grocery employees and their families with the gift of education

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – June 24, 2016 – Hundreds of California grocery industry employees with receive life-changing financial assistance this year through college scholarships awarded by the California Grocers Association Educational Foundation.

Currently the largest statewide grocery industry scholarship program in America, the Foundation will offer 376 deserving students a record $588,100 in financial relief from ever-rising costs that prevent many from completing their education, a $38,000 increase over last year’s award total.

“The significance of this scholarship program and the grocery industry’s generosity cannot be overstated; this program has been indispensable to countless individuals. At a time when students continuously struggle to continue their education while lessening their financial burden, this program ensures that hundreds of students every year will receive the financial support they need,” commented Brad Askeland, CGAEF Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Beginning with a single scholarship in 1992, the Foundation has grown exponentially over the last 25 years to bestow more than 3,000 worthy college students with awards totaling more than $3.5 million —ensuring that California’s grocery employees and their dependents have the resources necessary to start or complete their higher education. The program includes four types of scholarships: CGAEF funded, Legacy, Donor and Piggyback Partnership Scholarships.

CGA Educational Foundation college scholarships are open to high school seniors, college freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students who are dependents of employees, or are themselves employed by a California Grocers Association member company.

“The growth of the Foundation’s college scholarship program has been nothing short of phenomenal,” noted CGA President and CEO Ronald Fong. “In these challenging economic times, the mission of the CGAEF is helping individuals achieve their goals by providing the opportunity to enhance job skills and education by assisting with the cost of tuition is all the more important.”

Shiloh London, CGAEF Executive Director, also cited the vision for the college scholarship program. “We hope the results of our program this year will be twofold – that California’s grocery industry will retain skilled, qualified employees, and that this will serve as a catalyst for future philanthropic fundraising in ever larger amounts to support present and future generations of grocery industry employees,” she said.

The CGA Educational Foundation was created under the direction of the California Grocers Association Board of Directors in 1992 and is celebrating its 25h anniversary in 2017. Its mission is to provide financial assistance to advance the educational goals of CGA member company employees and their dependents and offer educational programs to advance the grocery industry.

About our honorees:

James E. Teel, Co-chair Emeritus, Board of Directors
Joyce Raley Teel, Owner and Co-chair Emeritus, Board of Directors

James E. Teel celebrates 65 years of service with Raley’s in 2014. Jim began working for Thomas P. Raley as a bottle sorter while attending McClatchy High School in Sacramento. He continued to work for Raley’s while he earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Sacramento State College in 1952.

Jim learned the grocery business from the ground up – loading, unloading and driving delivery trucks, as well as working as a Grocery Clerk and Produce Clerk. After college graduation, he worked as an Apprentice Butcher at store level for two years. He was then promoted to Meat Buyer and began working at Raley’s corporate office.  While there, he helped set up the company’s central control operation for merchandising and buying, and became the company’s first Personnel Director in 1958. Over the years, Jim became a trusted adviser to owner, Tom Raley, serving as Vice President of Operations and later Chairman of the Board.  He now serves as Co-chair Emeritus with his wife, Joyce, whom he married in 1950. He served on the board of the Northern California Grocers Association for 15 years and is a former president of that organization.

Joyce Raley Teel, daughter of Raley’s founder Thomas P. Raley, is the owner of the company and serves as Co-chair Emeritus with her husband. Scholarships To Help Students Offset Rising Tuition Costs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – February 2, 2015 – For the first time in its 23-year history, the California Grocers Association Educational Foundation College Scholarship Program, the nation’s largest statewide program supporting the grocery industry, will provide a record $500,000 in financial relief from ever rising costs that prevent many students from completing their education.

CGA member company employees and their dependents are eligible to apply for this life-changing financial assistance for the 2015-16 academic year through college scholarships awarded by CGAEF – a $92,000 increase over last year’s award total.

“The significance of this scholarship program and the grocery industry’s generosity cannot be overstated; this program has been indispensable to countless individuals. At a time when students struggle to continue their education while attempting to lessen their financial burden, this program ensures that hundreds of students every year will receive the financial support they need,” said Jim Van Gorkom, CGAEF Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

“CGAEF scholarship donors are investing in the development of tomorrow’s grocery industry leaders,” added Van Gorkom. “We are grateful for the tremendous ongoing support of CGA member companies which allows the Foundation an opportunity to provide college scholarships to deserving students.”

Beginning with a single scholarship in 1992, the Foundation has grown exponentially over the last 23 years to bestow almost 3,000 worthy college students with scholarships totaling more than $3.5 million – ensuring that California’s grocery employees and their dependents have the resources necessary to start or complete their higher education.

The program includes four types of scholarships: CGAEF funded, Legacy, Donor and Piggyback. CGAEF college scholarships are open to high school seniors, college freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students who are dependents of employees or are themselves employed by a CGA member company. The online scholarship application is available through April 1 at www.cgaef.org.

“Education and training represent essential tools to the future prosperity of our industry,” noted CGAEF Executive Director Shiloh London. “In these uncertain economic times, providing opportunities for individuals to enhance job skills and further educational goals is more important than ever.”

“Too many talented students are being forced to curtail their education and career ambitions because of financial constraints,” said London. “With 300 scholarships, we hope these extraordinary individuals can attend college, earn their degree, and go on to make an impact in their professions and their communities.”

Historic Merger to Create Single, United Industry Voice.

In a strategic move that strengthens California’s grocery industry, the California Independent Grocers Association (CIGA) has merged into the California Grocers Association (CGA) effective May 1, 2014.

“The importance of this merger cannot be overstated,” said Ronald Fong, CGA President and CEO. “The combining of these two great associations will significantly strengthen the industry’s advocacy efforts at both the state and local levels, while providing greater member services to an even more diverse group of grocery retailers and suppliers.”

Each association has served California’s grocery industry for more than 100 years. CGA represents more than 80 percent of California’s grocery industry including retail grocery chains, independents, wholesalers, brokers and suppliers. CIGA is comprised of independent grocery store owners operating throughout Northern and Central California.

This is the second merger for CGA in the past 22 years. The Southern California Grocers Association merged with CGA in 1992.

“We warmly welcome our new members from CIGA. Combining our efforts and resources allows the Association to better serve grocery retailers throughout California, both large and small,” said CGA Chair Mary Kasper of Fresh & Easy. “More retailers will have access to the resources needed to operate in California’s complex regulatory and legislative environment.”

In addition, Kasper said, the merger expands the association’s diverse membership, brings uniformity to industry messaging and makes CGA even more responsive to industry changes and challenges.

“By merging these two associations,” Kasper said, “CGA firmly establishes itself as the premier voice of California grocery retailers and suppliers. The grocery community is one of the state’s largest employers, and we proudly serve our neighborhoods in many different ways. We look forward to working with and learning from our CIGA colleagues. This merger sends a clear message we are strong and united.”

“The grocery industry is a vital component of local communities throughout California,” said CIGA Executive Committee Chair Bob Parriott, Twain Harte Market, Twain Harte, Calif. “By joining these two long-established grocery organizations we will greatly increase our sphere of influence in state and local government.”

CGA has long recognized the critical role independents play in its advocacy efforts, said Immediate Past CGA Chair Kevin Davis, Bristol Farms, noting nearly 80 percent of CGA’s member companies are independents. “As an independent grocer myself, I know that when local, family-owned grocery store owners speak, elected officials are more apt to listen,” Davis said. “CGA has a very strong advocacy program. Merging the two associations will only serve to strengthen its efforts.”

CGA will retain several CIGA signature programs including its coupon redemption company, annual educational conference, and annual golf tournament.

CIGA President Jeff Snadow joins the CGA executive team and will focus on the Association’s for-profit company, along with programming tailored to independent retailers. Fong will continue to serve as President and CEO of the combined entity.

“We are very excited at this opportunity to unite associations,” Snadow said. “This merger is of tremendous benefit to the independent grocer who now has access to many additional industry-related programs.”

“CIGA diligently served the independent retail community for many decades, as has CGA,” Fong said. “Our new members will have access to CGA’s robust suite of membership services, including an expanded government relations advocacy, multi-information channels, numerous networking events and our educational foundation which provides college scholarships and tuition reimbursement for CGA members.”
