Mid-October was the deadline for the federal government to take action to fund SNAP benefits amid the ongoing government shutdown. No action was taken, meaning SNAP recipients nationwide will lose their benefits next month. In California, that means that CalFresh food benefits, which are completely federally funded, will not be provided to 5.5 million Californians during the month of November.
CDSS provided CGA with in-store flyers retailers can use to notify customers of the shutdown and direct them to resources. Access the flyers below in both English and Spanish:
State officials confirmed with CGA that once a budget deal is reached and the federal government releases funding, it will take two to four days before benefits could be issued.

On the last weekend of September, CGA kicked off the first Gather California in Rancho Mirage. This reimagined conference brought the California grocery community together at a premium resort location for three days of connection, productive business meetings, and fresh insights. We hope those who attended feel more connected than ever to grocery peers and prepared to thrive in the California market.
In addition to our brand-new venue, our reimagined event featured several new events and connective networking experiences, including the Collaboration Kickoff, DIY Networking Adventure, and Dine For A Cause. The popular Emerging Brands Pitch Contest made its return for the fourth year, with Maple Pop! taking home first place. Our General Session program featured an insightful panel discussion between President of Food 4 Less/Foods Co. Kendra Doyel, CGA Board Chair and Chief Administrative Officer of North State Grocery, Inc. Michel LeClerc, and author and political strategist MikeMadrid about what makes doing business in California unique.
Keynote speakers Brent Gleeson, Victoria LaBalme and Chris Failla offered their perspectives on leadership and adaptability through our evolving industry over a series of education sessions. Though we made several changes to this year’s event, Gather also reprised our crowd-favorite Independent Grocers Forum and Enterprise Risk Protection Executive Summit.
Let’s Gather Again
Thank you to all of those who were a part of the first Gather California. Save the date for the next Gather California, taking place September 27-29, 2026 at the Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort and Spa in Rancho Mirage, California. We can’t wait to gather again!

The CGA Board of Directors took a spin through the future of retail for an immersive Retail Tomorrow experience. Our group visited the Irvine and Young Design Academy at USC to talk all things AI and retail, lunched atop the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, met with entrepreneurial-minded Venture Capitalists Michael Jones and Peter Pham, and TikTok-shopped our way through Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade.
Thank you to our sponsors Kimberly Clark, Instacart, RMS Inc., Kellanova, and Certified Federal Credit Union for making this trip to the future possible. View event photos below.

The Real Values Behind Leadership
Humans are the only creatures on the planet who have a gap between stimulus and response. Your leadership isn’t found in job titles or policies, but rather how you use the “gift of the gap”: how you overcome emotions in order choose to handle a rude customer, respond to an empty shift, and balance policy with empathy and humanity.
In other words, it’s not a poster on the breakroom wall—it’s embedded in the barcode of everything you do.
This full-day experience—designed specifically for store-level leaders—is an engaging, funny, and deeply practical exploration of what leadership really looks like on the floor. Through stories, laughter, structured reflection, and high-energy collaboration and competition, you will identify the values that will actually shape your decisions—and leave with a leadership tool you can use immediately to ensure you’re not distracted from that commitment.
We’ll explore why real leadership often feels invisible, why good people sometimes make bad choices under pressure, and how to build a personal “leadership test” that helps you lead with clarity and consistency—even on days when everything’s going sideways.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
Identify the core personal leadership values that already drive your leadership (and define them in real-life terms)
Engage in a deeper, collective examination of the organizational values you use to guide decision-making in the workplace
Recognize the simple, often invisible actions that define true leadership in a retail environment
Build a simple daily accountability tool to turn values into habits (even in chaotic or exhausting shifts)
Learn and share strategies with peers for managing people, pressure, and performance with integrity
Better understand the professional and financial support offered by CGA in building your skills and career
Featured Speaker
Drew Dudley
Somewhere around the middle of his undergraduate education, Drew realized engaging with the world was a lot more fun than writing papers about it. While still a student he became heavily involved in Canada’s largest post-secondary charitable initiative in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada, eventually serving as the National Chair of the organization. As he moved into his career, he took on the challenge of creating and building the Leadership Development Program at the University of Toronto, which became the largest and most dynamic in the country.
It was those leadership students who changed the course of Drew’s professional life: they secretly organized a campaign to put him onstage at TEDxToronto 2010, where he delivered a talk that would go on to generate more than 8 million views around the web. A high-achieving lifestyle took its toll however: undiagnosed bipolar disorder set the foundation for binge eating and drinking, and Drew grew to over 300 pounds while struggling with the emotional challenges of a career that kept him on the road 250 days a year.
Drew credits the Day One process with saving his life—he began applying the process to improving his mental and physical health. Recognizing how many people were struggling silently with similar battles, Drew began infusing these experiences into his keynotes, hoping to remind people that their scars in no way stand in the way of their leadership.
In 2018, Drew shared both his story and the Day One process in his first book This is Day One: A Practical Guide to Leadership That Matters. Today, Drew continues to travel the world sharing the Day One process with organizations of all kinds—aiming to redefine leadership for as many people as possible.

Exploring Make America Healthy Again
The national conversation around public health and wellness is changing, thanks in part to a movement led by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In Issue 1 of California Grocer magazine, we unpack the Make America Healthy Again or “MAHA” movement and explore the personalities driving the online conversation about reshaping how Americans eat. Plus, our columnists take on the MAHA movement, from ultra-processed foods to artificial food dyes.
While this issue will bring you up to speed on all things MAHA, we also highlight industry leadership and burgeoning talent. Meet this year’s CGA Rising Stars of California’s grocery community and get to know The Illuminators Headlite, CGA Board Member, and industry powerhouse Subriana Pierce.

On Wednesday, April 23 the grocery community came together in Sacramento to advocate for the industry. More than 70 grocers participated in 40 legislative meetings with lawmakers and staff to tell their stories about how proposed legislation would impact their business. Priorities for the day included self-checkout, gift cards, shopping carts, food access, and swipe fees.
During our morning program leading reporters from the Capitol Press Corp, Ashley Zavala, KCRA 3, Alexei Koseff, CalMatters, and Dustin Gardiner, Politico joined for a Media Matters panel discussion. New legislative members Asm. Alexandra Macedo and Asm. Mark Gonzalez joined for a Meet the Freshmen panel. And finally, veteran lawmakers Asm. Heath Flora and Asm. Liz Ortega provided insights on what they’re seeing at the Capitol.
After a productive day at the Capitol, lawmakers met us back at CGA headquarters to mix and mingle with the grocery community. The highlight of the evening was the second annual Legislative Bag-off Competition, judged by national best bagging champion from Nugget Markets. Competitors included Asm. Juan Alanis, Asm. Alexandra Macedo, Asm. Blanca Pacheco, and Asm. Jose Solache. Asm. Alexandra Macedo took home first place.
Thank you to all who joined us on this important day of advocacy for the California grocery community. Thank you to our 2025 sponsors for supporting our event!
