City of San Francisco Food Service Waste Reduction Ordinance

Details of regulation: Food vendors may not sell prepared food in disposable food service ware that contains polystyrene foam. City facility food providers may not provide prepared food in disposable food service ware that contains polystyrene foam. City departments may not purchase, acquire or use disposable food service ware that contains polystyrene foam. City contractors and lessees may not use disposable food service ware that contains polystyrene foam in City facilities and while performing under a City contract or lease.

Ordinances:

  1. No. 295-06 – Ordinance amending the San Francisco Environment Code by adding Chapter 16, Sections 1601 through 1611, to: (1) prohibit the use of polystyrene foam disposable food service ware and require the use of biodegradable/compostable or recyclable disposable food service ware by restaurants, retail food vendors, City departments and the City’s contractors and lessees unless there is no affordable alternative; and, (2) provide for penalties for violation; and amending the San Francisco Health Code by repealing Sections 469 through 469.10, which ban the use of food packaging and plastic food service ware made with chlorofluorocarbons.
