Carpinteria

Ban on non-recyclable plastic food takeout containers, including expanded polystyrene. Chapter 8.5 of Municipal Code. Effective September 1, 2009. Expansion of the ordinance adopted 11/13/2017 to ban the retail sale and distribution of expanded polystyrene products within the city.

Details of regulation: Prohibits food providers from dispensing prepared food to customers in disposable food service containers made entirely or in part from non-recyclable plastic. Users of any city facilities, city-managed concessions, and city sponsored events (not limited to city franchises, contractors, and vendors doing business within the city) are prohibited from using disposable food service containers made entirely or in part from non-recyclable plastic. Each food providers is required to sign and report on the first business day of the calendar year a certification stating that the owners and operators of the establishment are aware of the requirements regarding the use of non-recyclable plastic. Exemptions include declared emergencies, items packaged outside the city, and undue hardship.
