Santa Monica Plastic Disposable Food Service Products

Ban on all polystyrene AND most other non-recyclable plastic disposable food service containers. This makes for one of the strongest bans in the nation.

Details of regulation: Food providers are prohibited from dispensing prepared food to customers in disposable food service containers made from expanded polystyrene. Food providers are prohibited from dispensing prepared food to customers in disposable food service containers made from non-recyclable plastic. All City facilities, City-managed concessions, City sponsored events, and City permitted events are prohibited from using disposable food service containers made from expanded polystyrene or non-recyclable plastic. Exemptions include undue hardship.

Details of regulation: These updated regulations requires food providers to dispense prepared food or beverages to customers only in marine degradable disposable food service ware. Food or beverage providers shall provide marine degradable disposable straws and utensils to customers only upon request, but may ask customers if disposable straws or utensils are needed.
