College Scholarship Information

The growth of the Foundation's scholarship program has been nothing short of phenomenal since its inception in 1998. For the 2011-12 scholarship season, the Foundation, with the help of its members, awarded 216 college scholarships totaling $288,250. This includes four types of scholarships: CGAEF funded, Legacy, Donor and Piggback Partnership Scholarships.

APPLYING FOR A SCHOLARSHIP

CGAEF Scholarships are open to high school seniors, college freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are the dependents of employees or are themselves employees of a CGA member company.

New for 2012/13: Graduate student scholarships are available for CGA member employees.

Applications for the 2012-2013 academic year will be accepted starting January 1, 2012. Click here for details on how to apply.

AVAILABLE SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, evidence of outstanding character and leadership potential. Undergraduate student applicants must be planning to enroll as full-time college students in the Fall of 2012 and Spring of 2011 at an accredited, non-profit college or university in the United States. Graduate student applicants must be planning to enroll in a graduate program during the Fall 2012 or Spring 2013 at an accredited, non-profit college or university in the United States. All scholarships are one-time awards.

The following scholarships are available for the 2012-13 program.

Don C. Beaver Memorial Scholarship - $2,000
Established in recognition of the many contributions made to the retail grocery industry by Don C. Beaver, former CGA President from 1979 to 1996. This scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a career in the grocery industry.

Hall of Achievement Scholarship - $2,000
In recognition of Steve Junqueiro and Bob Lim's induction into the CGAEF Hall of Achievement. This scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a career in the grocery industry.

CGA Educational Foundation Scholarships - Six @ $1,000

CGAEF Graduate Scholarships - Two @ $2,000
These scholarships are split between a retail member and a supply/wholesale member.

Lou Amen Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Lou Amen, Super A Foods.

Bimbo Bakeries USA Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Bimbo Bakeries USA.

Jack H. Brown Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Jack Brown, Stater Bros. Markets.

Roger K. Hughes Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Roger K. Hughes, HOWS Markets.

Don Kaplan Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Don Kaplan, Bonfare Markets.

Darioush Khaledi Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Darioush Khaledi, K.V. Mart Co.

Peter & Jody Larkin Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of former CGA President Peter Larkin and wife Jody.

W.R. "Bill" MacAloney Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of W. R. "Bill" MacAloney, Jax Markets.
The scholarship is awarded to a student who resides in Santa Fe Springs, Ontario or Anaheim, CA.

Louis Melillo Sr. Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Louis Melillo Sr., Louis Foods Supermarkets.

Al Plamann Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Al Plamann, Unified Grocers, Inc.

Bill & Patty Roulette Legacy Scholarship - $1,500
In recognition of Bill & Patty Roulette, Gelson's Markets.

Save Mart Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Save Mart Supermarkets.

Allan & Mary Scharn Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Allan & Mary Scharn, Gelson's Markets.

Trelut Family Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Jim and Lynda Trelut.
This scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a degree in marketing or human resources.

Bob Wilson Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Bob Wilson, Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream.

Gene & Peggy Yee Legacy Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Gene & Peggy Yee, Dick's Market.
This scholarship is awarded to a student who resides and attends college in Northern California.

Classic Wines of California Scholarships - Two @ $2,000
Donated by Classic Wines of California.

Paul A. Hughes Memorial Scholarship - $1,000
Donated by HOWS Market in memory of Paul A. Hughes.

Illuminator Educational Foundation Scholarships - Eight @ $1,000
Donated by The Illuminators Educational Foundation.

Larry Kranich Memorial Scholarship - $1,000
In recognition of Larry Kranich, former President of Quik Stop Markets.
This scholarship is awarded to convenience store employees or their dependents.

TruGrocer Federal Credit Union Scholarship - $1,500
Donated by TruGrocer Federal Credit Union.

All scholarships are one-time awards that are applied toward the recipient's educational expenses at any accredited, non-profit college or university in the United States. There is a new competition for awards each year. A recipient may reapply in a subsequent year.
