FSIS became aware of the problem during the course of an on-going investigation into a cluster of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in Colorado with illness onset dates between June 4, 2010 and June 9, 2010. Working in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the New York Department of Health, 5 case-patients have been identified in Colorado as well as 1 case-patient in New York with an indistinguishable PFGE pattern. FSIS determined that there is an association between the ground bison products and the cluster of illnesses in the state of Colorado. FSIS is continuing to work with the CDC, affected state public health partners, and the company on the investigation. Anyone with signs or symptoms of foodborne illness should contact a health care provider. The following products are subject to recall: [View Labels (PDF Only)]: E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a physician. FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground bison that has been cooked to a temperature of 160° F. The only way to be sure ground bison is cooked to a high enough temperature to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer to measure the internal temperature. Announces Voluntary Product Recall because of Possible Health Risk Ready Pac Foods Ali Leon - Corporate Communications 626-678-2732 Ready Pac Foods, Inc. is recalling 702 cases of the Baby Spinach variety of Spinach Temptations 6 oz. bagged salads with Useby Dates of July 4 with Product Code 11707B, IR127121 and July 8 with Product Code 12007B, IR130373 because they could be contaminated by Escherichia coli 0157:H7 (Ecoli 0157.H7). The recall extends only to products with this Use-by Date or Product Code sold in the following states: California, Washington and Arizona. No other Ready Pac Foods, Inc. products are included in the recall. No illnesses related to these products have been reported. Ready Pac is collaborating closely with the FDA. The recall notification is being issued out of an abundance of caution based on a confirmed positive result for Ecoli 0157:H7 in a random sample test conducted by the FDA. Ecoli 0157:H7 is an organism that may cause diarrheal illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death. Because it is still possible that products bearing the Use-by Dates of July 4 and July 8 with the above Products Codes could be on store shelves, this recall extends to retailers as well as consumers. Ready Pac believes that it is important to alert consumers and retailers who might still possess one of the potentially affected salads to dispose of it immediately. Ready Pac Foods, Inc. has earned an outstanding safety record for over 40 years and has taken immediate precautionary measures to protect public health by issuing this voluntary recall and removing product from the market. We have notified all of our retail customers who have received the product in question and directed them to remove it from their shelves. Instructions for Consumers: Check your refrigerator for Ready Pac Baby Spinach, Spinach Temptations 6 oz. bagged salads with the Use-by Dates of July 4 and July 8 with the above Products Codes. The Use-by Dates are found in the upper left hand corner of the package with the Product Codes located immediately underneath. Consumers who may have purchased the affected product are asked to record the Use-by Date and Product Code, immediately dispose of the product, and contact the Ready Pac Consumer Affairs representative, toll-free at (800) 800-7822, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Pacific Time) to obtain a full refund. Instructions for Retailers: All retailers who receive this product are asked to reconfirm with their distribution centers and all individual stores to ensure that no Baby Spinach with the Code Dates of July 4 and July 8 with the above Product Codes remains in their inventory or at store locations. Each package bears the establishment number "EST. 6935" or "EST. 10002" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The code number "6935" is ink jetted on the back of each package. These products were produced on various dates from January 28, 2010, through May 21, 2010, and were sent to Firehouse Foods, Inc., a distributor in Alsip, Ill., for further Internet and retail sales. The problem was discovered by FSIS during a labeling review at the establishment. FSIS has received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Salmonella can affect animals and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products. People handling the treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the chews or any surfaces exposed to these products. Consumers should dispose of these products in a safe manner by securing them in a covered trash receptacle. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers immediately. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately. The Beef Filet Squares were shipped to distributors and retailers throughout the US. These individuals have been notified and have activated their recall procedures. The treats are sold in 10oz plastic bags marked with “Lot # 10084TL7 Best By Mar 24, 2012” on the top of the bag and on a sticker applied to the bottom. No illnesses have been reported to date. FDA collected a surveillance sample of “Merrick Beef Filet Squares for Dogs” (lot #10084TL7) which were purchased from a retail store. The sample tested positive for Salmonella. Consumers who have purchased 10 ounce packages of “Beef Filet Squares for Dogs” are urged to return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. United Pet Group 1-877-399-5226 United Pet Group, Cincinnati, Ohio is voluntarily expanding its recent recall of its Pro-Pet Adult Daily Vitamin Supplement tablets for Dogs to include additional pet nutritional supplement products for dogs and cats due to possible Salmonella contamination. The list of recalled products is provided below. The Food and Drug Administration is aware of this recall. The recalled products are sold nationally at various retailers. The products include various United Pet Group Pro-Pet and Excel branded products for dogs and cats, and certain other private label brands of the same products. All of the affected products are in tablet and powdered form. These products are being removed from retail stores and consumers should immediately stop feeding these supplements to their pets. The affected products are those with expiration dates that include and are between "01/2013" and "06/2013." Products with expiration dates earlier than 01/2013 or later than 06/2013 are not included in this recall. The expiration date can be found imprinted vertically on the right side of the product label. Laboratory testing has revealed that some lots of some of these products may be contaminated with Salmonella. The company is recalling the additional products out of an abundance of caution.
